Training as a cutting machine operator
‘Right down to the micrometre range …’ Rafal, apprentice at NUMERIK JENA GmbH

What do you learn during your training as a cutting machine operator?
You learn to plan and realise the production of components. In theory, we mainly learn about the properties of different materials. In practice, it’s initially about the basics of metalworking such as filing, drilling and grinding, and then later more and more about precision, i.e. very precise work on CNC lathes and milling machines. This goes down to the micrometre range, i.e. 0.001 millimetres. With the help of measuring and
We then use measuring and testing equipment to check the quality achieved in the production of the workpieces.
How did you get into this profession and do you need special talents for it?
You need to be quite good at maths and physics and be interested in technology and computers. You also need to be able to work with concentration and precision. I find it exciting to produce parts myself that you can then assemble. I completed a 14-day work placement here, where you go through all the departments.
Which products are manufactured by Numerik?
Primarily linear and rotary optical measuring systems for displacement, position and angle measurement. These are high-quality sensors that are used in many machines, for example in CNC measuring machines, in magnetic resonance tomographs and even in space in the Sentinel satellites.
What training opportunities are there?
Once I have completed my apprenticeship, I can become a technician and master craftsman or even study mechanical engineering. But for now I will stay here at the company. The employees help me wherever they can, the atmosphere is very good and I really enjoy my work.
