‘Nursing dual’ apprenticeship and studies in one

‘A profession for men too’, Richard, student on the dual training-integrated nursing degree programme at Jena University Hospital and the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena

Auszubildender setzt Spritze am Patienten an.

What are you doing and what do you like best about it?

I’m studying nursing at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences here in Jena and as part of my studies I’m doing a vocational training programme to become a nurse at Jena University Hospital. It’s important to me not to do desk work – I want to help people. I would like to set an example that men can also take up this profession, which can also be physically demanding, and do it well.

Why did you decide to do this?

I wanted to complete a degree after my A-levels, which would allow me to work in direct contact with people. It was also important to me to really get a secure, permanent job after graduation and to be able to earn money. That is definitely the case in nursing.

What is/was a personal challenge for you in your work and how do you deal with it?

All people are different, and that is certainly the biggest challenge for nurses. To nurse everyone individually and personally and finding the balance between emotional care and a pragmatic approach is different for everyone. I often think to myself: How would I want to be treated? Every team is also different, you always have to find new ways of working and adapt to each other.

What career prospects do you have?

After four years of studying for a bachelor’s degree, you have the opportunity to complete a distance learning programme in nursing science/nursing management. This degree qualifies you for responsible tasks such as managing care facilities. I would like to work at the university hospital and help to bring about future changes in care, a shift towards better care and more individuality.

Bei dem ausbildungsintegrierendem Studium sind auch Vorlesungen teil der Ausbildung.
